phICA NEWS!
We are thrilled to announce the generous support by Macy’s of phICA’s exhibition projects especially as they relate to “culture, collaboration and innovation with Brazil.” We received the announcement with the following encouragement, “we extend our best wishes for your continued success. It is a pleasure to be counted among your current supporters.”

phICA and Ted Decker on You Tube!
Rio de Janeiro visual artist and musician Edgar Duvivier made and posted a video of Ted Decker guiding him through the recent exhibitions in Rio de Janeiro.

In an impromptu manner, Decker, speaking in Portuguese (people who speak Portuguese claim to understand what he said!), discussed phICA’s exhibit Sue Chenoweth: Real and Applied and a concurrent exhibition he co-curated titled O espaço entre (The Space Between) which included 7 artists based in Phoenix in their first international exhibition.

Putting Phoenix and phICA on the international map! Ted Decker connects Rio de Janeiro and Phoenix mayors!
Ted presented a packet of information and an introductory letter to Rio de Janeiro Prefeito (Mayor) Eduardo Paes from Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton who also made a video welcoming people to the exhibition of Sue Chenoweth’s work at Largo das Artes, Rio de Janeiro. The video played for audiences during the 6-week exhibition. We hope that this introduction will lead to future discussions about cultural tourism and trade between these dynamic cities with equally dynamic mayors.
phICA gratefully acknowledges the amazing, professional volunteer support of community art leader Vicki Stouffer. Vicki is working diligently to help us take phICA to the next level by writing grants, helping with project coordination, and analyzing new strategic initiatives.

The solo exhibition, Sue Chenoweth: Real and Applied will open at Modified Arts, Phoenix, on November 16 (Third Friday) and will run through December 31st, 2012. A small concurrent exhibition curated by Ted G. Decker and Vicki Stouffer will showcase art made by artists who have attended artist's residencies. phICA will present impactful educational programming that encourages artists to include artist residencies as one of the strategies in their professional practice.

Ted Decker has been invited to speak about phICA at the ENARTE Conference at the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) on July 23 and 24, 2012. This conference attracts 800+ people from throughout Brazil. Decker will speak about phICA as an innovative model for community engagement with visual art. Phoenix-based artist Sue Chenoweth will also speak with artists and art students attending the conference about her experiences as a professional artist.

Ted is introducing Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton to Rio de Janeiro Prefeito (Mayor) Eduardo Paes. Mayor Stanton will make a video welcoming people in Rio to Sue Chenoweth's solo exhibit and will invite them and Mayor Paes to visit Phoenix. We hope that this introduction will lead to future discussions about cultural tourism and trade between these dynamic cities with equally dynamic mayors.
ABOUT phICA
Phoenix Institute of Contemporary Art (phICA) is a not-for-profit organization which compliments other regional cultural institutions while differentiating itself through collaboration and community partnerships and by offering new portals of entry for enjoying, understanding, and interpreting contemporary art. phICA was envisioned and is structured to be organic and efficient and is a non-collecting institution with a primary focus on exhibition projects, artist residencies, and arts incubation activities.
The founding Board of Directors first met to discuss their mutual vision in October 2007, officially founded the organization in 2009 with the first exhibition project launched in February 2011.
